The purpose of the school-based substance abuse program is
to reach today's youth within the school system, where they
can be most effectively reached. You can often connect with
this population in order to help them to make healthy life
choices, work with them on their current substance abuse problems
or provide a place to discuss the substance abuse of a significant
person in their life. Through a comprehensive program an effective
intervention is possible with a vulnerable population that
is often outside the loop of traditional treatment service
modalities.
Our current school-based program is comprised of the following:
- Prevention Services consisting of psychoeducational
components:
- A Student Education Series addresses topics such as
drug use/abuse, assertiveness techniques, self-esteem,
evaluating and dealing with feelings, anger control,
positive alternatives to drug use, relaxation exercises
and values clarification.
- Psychoeducational groups help youth discuss issues
arising in the education series.
- Intervention/Treatment Services consisting of:
- Individual Counseling
- Group Counseling - dividing into need-based groups
according to assessment. Examples have been Children
of Addiction, Recovery, High Risk of Abuse and Eating
Disorder Groups.
- Family Therapy - assisting families in working through
substance abuse problems in a supportive and productive
manner, available day and evening.
- Parent Education and Support Group to discuss various
drug-related and parenting issues
- Staff In-Service Training program addresses topics
such as current street drugs and their effects, children
of addiction, treatment issues, AIDS, and dual diagnosis
issues as needed.
